Comic Con 2k8 Report
Considering that Comic Con International cut off ticket sales this year, I’d say we had a pretty eventful show. I spent the early part of Preview Night passing out invitations to Side B and catching up with friends I can only see once or twice a year.
While I was talking with Art Baltazar about Side B, I was delightfully interrupted by Dave Roman and got to talk to him, Raina, and Marion Vitus. I also caught up with Jim Mahfood and Dave Crosland before running off to make some last-minute purchases before the hall opened.
Highlights of the evening included listening to Rstevens and Meredith Gran talk comics with Scott McCloud as well as getting my new copy of Octopus Pie 2 signed. I also stopped by the Abstract Studio booth and purchased a print and sketchbook from Terry Moore. I also stopped by the Viper Comics booth and said hey.
Our neighbor this year was Tom Columbus of the CAKE anthology. I have a tendency to come across his website by accident on a pretty consistent basis, so it was a joy to meet him in person. On our other side was Justin Orr of Jusscope. Nearby was Peter Lazarski of Imaginary Monsters. We have a mutual client in Mose Giganticus and a similar love for silk-screening, so we had a lot to talk about.
Other people that stopped by through the week were: Karen Luk, a variety of Mod Buttons clients, Wes Molebash, Les McClaine, Frank, and Tyler.
Tons of webcomic artists/labels swarmed upon San Diego Comic Con this year. Among them were usuals like Dumbrella, PVP, Penny Arcade, and Blank Label Comics. Other artists that showed up were: Aeire, Chris Daily, Jennie Breeden, Randy Milholland, and Spike. Faith Erin Hicks and Nikki Cook were also around. It was like webcomic-con-olooza.
As far as movie stars are concerned, the only person we saw for sure was Dietrich Bader who happened to walk right down our aisle. Mike is also fairly certain he saw Breckin “I was in Garfield mother-f-er” Meyer at the end of the aisle at one point. While walking around; however, our friends actually saw the likes of such stars as: Mark Hamill, David Boreanaz, Jewel Staite, and John Barrowman.
We saw lots of people sporting Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog shirts and/or costumes, which was awesome. We also sold out of all our Pluto shirts along with a ton of other merch. We’ll be doing reprints of a lot of stuff soon, but most definitely before APE in November.
Until then!
